We Have The Power To End Youth Homelessness

Hi everyone,

If you know me, you know that every year I volunteer, sleep and fundraise for Sleep at the G. Putting an end to homelessness is something I am passionate about and I believe that everyone deserves a roof over their head, safety, stability, access to resources and  a good quality of life.

Of the people experiencing homelessness in Victoria, over 6000 of them are young people aged 12-24 years old. This could be in the form of invisible homelessness as well. By this I mean on the couch in someone’s house (this is often a stranger and can sometimes be unsafe), in unconventional settings such a cars, vehicles and tents, in financially unsustainable or broken down hotels and unsafe rooming houses , in overcrowded dwellings ( think 10 people squished in a small bedroom) and also in supported accommodation which is short term and in high demand ( only 109 beds across metropolitan Victoria).

Whether you’re sleeping rough outside or in one of these settings, its becomes near impossible to hold down a job, engage in education, maintain good mental hygiene , stay healthy  and connected to community or any important relationships in your life. Your quality of life tends to fade, there is a higher chance you are exposed to unsafe environments, detetriotating mental health and well being and violence.

With the housing crisis on a rise, MCM Group continues to work hard at building more accommodation for young people and continue to provide services in safe housing, supports for wellbeing, education, family violence and more.  Our young people need stability and support to develop life skills, heal from trauma, and to transition to independence.
